06 SES 10, Leading Media - Leading Education: Critical Considerations on Strategies of Empowerment and (Opening Up) Education
Symposium
Contribution
In Austria, Media Literacy should be embedded in school curricula. This does not ensure that media literacy is actually considered by teachers. It is also difficult to measure the outcomes. Furthermore, the existing tests are developed by university staff and thus are socially biased. Thus we invited 86 socially disadvantages students, aged 13 to 16 years, from seven schools in Vienna to develop a media literacy test. The result can be used as a possibility to enhance media literacy in lessons. A participatory action research method was used for the research. Protocols of the meetings with the students were analysed in regard to their actual participation in the research. The items created were analysed in regard to the students' understanding of media literacy. It could be shown that participation took place and was framed by the educational context. Media Literacy of the students was high and focused on digital media.
