Keynote lecture: German Studies on language diversity and education
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Ingrid Gogolin
Diversity of languages, cultural, ethnic and socio-economic living conditions is a basic feature of differentiated societies worldwide. Factors responsible for the growth of diversity in societies include social differentiation, the interdependence of migration, internationalisation and globalisation, as well as media that enable communication beyond fixed boundaries of place and time. Education systems are particularly affected by the consequences of growing societal diversity. Their pupils are compelled to develop, learn and become successfully educated under such conditions of diversity.
Such constellations are not new, and there is a rich tradition of research in this field in Germany. Nonetheless, numerous question remain open, especially those concerned with the effects of well-intentioned measures. This keynote lecture will present research findings that can lead to the cumulative development of a robust knowledge base concerning problems of diversity and education/educational achievement. These findings will be selected from the research projects representing Language Education and Multilingualism, a government-funded research cluster in Germany. This lecture aims to stimulate discussion on contributions of this research to cumulative knowledge on the interaction between diversity and education from a European perspective.
