Volunteers in Turkish Education Volunteers Foundation (TEGV) are supposed to spend at least two hours in the activity with the children. Most of the volunteers attend their activity, and afterwards they have a tendency to leave the education park immediately.The managers of the education park think that the more time volunteers spend at the park, the more connection they feel about the organization. Purpose:To analyze the volunteers’ reasons not spending time at the park after their class hours. Research question: what kinds of actions could be taken to make volunteers spend more time at TEGV? Rationale: With the decline of the social-democratic welfare state model and the rise of neoliberal thinking, governments have been relatively unable or unwilling to link economic activities such as production and consumption with social justice and environmental issues (Courville & Piper, 2004). Non-governmental organization played important roles in various sectors including education, especially after 1990s with the rise of globalization, to fulfill the gap of social state appeared after neoliberal politics. Individuals who participate in collective action seek to achieve some desirable end that they could not attain by acting alone (Teegen et al., 2004). As a result of this, they attend to NGOs to work as a volunteer. Study of Eliasoph show that volunteers want to “care about people”, not about politics (Wilson, 2000). Organizational effectiveness results from the organization’s fulfillment of members’ occupational needs (Puffer &Meindl, 1992). There are different reasons for people to work as volunteer such as personal satisfaction from helping others, having a sense of responsibility to correct social and community problems, and also gaining personal development skills (Jones & Hill, 2003). For most of the people, doing voluntary work resulted because of internal motivation, however in some conditions external motivation is also a case. Research on volunteering results suggest that people volunteer to improve their skills and make themselves more employable; stimulate social interactions that may develop into friendships (Murnighan et al., 1993). At some cases, people started to do voluntary work because it is requirement of a course during their school years (Jones & Hills, 2003). Although both external and internal motives make people work in the NGOs, volunteers still expect some important issues from NGOs such as working in an orderly environment, working in the framework of duties that are given to them, having respectful and close relationship in the NGO, and feeling belonging to the organization (Guder, 2006). It is important for NGOs know about expectations and needs of volunteers to offer more efficient and friendly working environment to them.

The questionnaire items were prepared by the researcher, as a result of the related literature review. The pilot study was used to create items about TEGV's working conditions. TEGV staff distributed the questionnaires. 41 volunteers were the sample of the study.34 (83%) of them were women, and 7 (17%) of them were men. The questionnaires had both five-point scales (“I definitely agree” to “I definitely do not agree”) and one open-ended question asked their opinions about the problem. There were eight items related with the reasons of being/ working as a volunteer. These items include both general and specific reasons related with the TEGV’s structure for working as a volunteer. There were seven items related with the actions that should be taken to prepare more efficient environment for volunteers to spend more time at TEGV. These items were specifically written for TEGV’s working conditions. The sample of study was limited to only 41 volunteers.So,this study could not be generalized.

63% of volunteers said that they would spend more time at TEGV if there were other responsibilities given to them in addition to teaching children. 77 % of the volunteers mentioned that they would stay more at TEGV, if they could share more time with children after the activity time. 97% of the volunteers said that they work as a volunteer to help other people. Also 97% of the volunteers said they work at TEGV, because they believe that they care about social problems in Turkish society. And 90% of the volunteers actually believe that they can be helpful to solve these social problems by working as a volunteer.There should be given more responsibilities to the volunteers in addition to teaching the children. If the volunteers take more roles in TEGV, they will feel more a sense of belonging to the TEGV.
