Western Culture is characterized basically by a strong ambiguity between profession and life course: Rationalized patterns in the professional and functional systems of economy, politics and society are confronted by significant increase of social expressivity, individuality and biographical self-emergence in defining own goals and “philosophies” of their primary systems (van der Loo, van Rijen). Both the social and the individual agendas line out partial incompatibilities which burden the subjects to balance work, life, social integration and own identity in a self-sufficient way. In the last three decades a complex cluster of accelerating change in technologies, economy, environment, politics and social structure has even reinforced these incompatibilities.
All processes and their complex demands of coping them can be studied very well in regard of the fundamental transformations which are evocated within the representative occupational regime according to the change from industrial society to knowledge society. There are three culture based key agendas of this transformation: The first change results from a dynamic increase of both complexity and contingency. These irritations of everyday-life-coordination are accompanied by discontinuity and poorness, it reduces social security and leads to disembedding (Sennett) and uprooting
· The second epoch-making transformation is originated in increasing financial deficits of the public sector. Public welfare support will be addressed to persons who are able to re-structure their work and life in a self-responsible manner (intensification of principle of subsidiarity).
· The third transformation is reasoned in a pluralistic form of dissemination of modern IT and media. Knowledge indeed can be asked multifarious but its constitutive use in regard of professional aims, life course and social demands is limited to some extend
The transformation agendas listed up above historically face central requests of pedagogy and they will push along it again into the centre of question how to deal with modern demands caused by interpenetrating each other system and biography. Especially a pedagogy may be demanded on high level of power which is interested in enforcement of social and biographical capabilities and self-awareness and therefore concerns topics like profession, occupation, labor market and restructuring of societal labor force.
This adjustment brings into focus questions of qualification and professional reorientation as well as questions how to deal with demands in every-day-life, life course and relevant social affairs. To concentrate on authenticity of an individual case-management therefore means implicating all unsolved questions of employability beyond direct interventions into the occupational fitness of someone.
Our concept refers first results and analytical impressions of a current project which addresses two modern groups which are confronted with unemployment: qualified mothers and engineers. It concerns to an integrated way of advancement both occupational career and re-integration to labor-market as well as the enforcement of social and biographical resources. From the point of view of the official employment office our central approach may be something like a pedagogical milestone for vocational efforts: To advocate labor exchange without ignoring regional embeddings and identities which are rooted within preferred biographical patterns and primary systems
