05 SES 03, Overcoming Ghettos: Transformative Schools that Transform Urban Areas
Symposium
Contribution
The La Paz school, which is located in the “Milagrosa” neighbourhood in Albacete, was previously in a marginalised situation. Each year less students were matriculating in the school, and a high percentage were involved in truancy. There were many problems and conflicts between the families and the teachers. The school carried out a series of steps to get out of the ghetto. Usually, when a school has “problematic” students they decide to redistribute students and separate them into different schools. In this case, the administration decided to create a quality educational project, transforming reality based on successful inclusive educational practices involving the collaboration of all the agents in and sectors of the community. In order to do so, they redistributed the teachers instead of the students. Firstly, the school, was closed down, and the teachers were sent to other schools. On the following day, the school opened up again with other name. This new school only accepted teachers who were willing and committed to applying the educational practices agreed upon through the Dialogic Inclusion Contract and who were also predisposed to participate in an educational process based on scientific educational premises to apply the successful actions.
