Parent- school relations in Poland. Parental engagement is a powerful lever for raising achievement in schools. Where parents and teachers work together to improve learning, the gains in achievement are significant. As world research sais- 86%[i] of the general public believes that support from parents is the most important way to improve the schools. In Poland until 1990 there was no parental involvement in school, parents were only guests in school, not part of school. It is very important question now after 20 years of democracy, do we have educational change in parent –school relations?
This study tested the hypothesis that parent involvement in school in Poland changed after school reform in 1999. Parent involvement is important to help learning child be as successful as possible. Educators recommend that parents take active roles in helping their children learn. But Polish school doesn’t have good tradition in this field. Parents, teachers, government started to see that issue as important after 1990 when democracy started. I was interested if changing school policy did really change anything in schools, in parent- teacher relations. I wanted to answer several particulars questions: do parents in new democratic schools system feel welcome at school, do parents feel important in school, do parents feel as being part of school, what teachers think about new school policy, do they see any change in relations with parents, what school principals think about change in this field. But also I wanted to get to know what else have to be changed in parent- school relations to make school and home work perfectly?
Those are the reasons why I decided to make research on parent- school relations in Poland.
Research were made on group of teachers principals, and parents from schools of one city and country schools. It was reports and perceptions of the variables of interest were assessed in a sample of 14 elementary schools distributed across city Toruń ( the city with a population of 200,000, situated in the middle of Poland) and surroundings. General research question was – “ did parent school- relations changed after school reform in Poland in 1999?”. Result of the study indicated how parents and teachers cooperate in all parent involvement fields: parent conferences , parent volunteers , parent home tutoring teacher perception of parent support etc. Research results are discussed with reference to parent-teacher role complementarily and implications for increasing productive interconnections between parents and schools. Educational activity is made up of actions by teachers , pupils and parents.
