All educational systems and consequently educational cultures are exposed to changes over time. In Austria as in most European countries the changes of some educational systems are documented and researched better than the development of other systems. The field of formal early childhood education belongs to the less documented educational systems in Austria. However it is worth examining it for various reasons: first of all because of the lack of scientific research in particular when it comes to historical perspectives; secondly this sector is characterized by public and private carriers in Austria and therefore unique; and thirdly formal childhood education is gaining more and more acceptance in society for somewhat different reasons. The key question of the research project focuses on the change of the discourse of formal early childhood education in Austria. More precisely it is asked whether the transformation of the culture of early childhood education can be interpreted as commodification. As a framework Michel Foucault‘s understanding of power and discourse and especially his lectures on the Birth of Biopolitics (2004) are used. Foucault’s understanding allows drawing the conclusion that a process of commodification is taking place in early childhood education and that it is possible to uncover these changes through discourse analysis.
