Contribution
The search for new approaches to social intervention in the public domain is based on the view that the late modern era is shaped by powers of identity and early modern powers of production and reproduction. This study observes an initiative by members of the creative class in Groningen, the Netherlands, trying to set a new stage for local public discourse on the identity of their region in the context of globalization. For this mission they used a couple of artistic interventions. Human identity is not an abstract or rational concept rooted in joint practices and shaped by great narratives. Identity is constructed and carried by different forms of subconscious cultural and creative expressions, where art shapes and communicates "small narratives": local and personal experiences of everyday life and cultural heritage. In communities where people have nothing in common except public space, interaction and joint practices are rooted in their identities and the ways they relate. Formal democratic debate can be observed from this perspective too. Through analysis in terms of stages and performances, and determining their effect on the forms of speech and modes of responsibility they produce, we might learn how to set better stages for democratic practice.
