Session Information
12 SES 04 (JS), Information Literacy
Joint Symposium with NW 16 (check Chairs)
Contribution
The research on assessing the Information Literacy Skills starts by the codified standards on this topic: for example the ACRL United States Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education and the ANZIIL Australian Information Literacy Standards. Applying those standards requires a deep analysis of three aspects: 1. The characteristics of measurability of the skills, which have to be assessed. 2. The choice among different instruments for assessing them. 3. The choice of the proper evaluation method of the collected data. The researcher on this topic needs to know which of the various methods he may include in the research design, and how to avoid the danger of bias or misinterpretation. A review will be presented of the various instruments available (e.g. survey, interview, screenshot recording, computer log), of the possibilities to use them and of the various methods for analyzing the data: text, video, and log analysis. The review will be based on scientific researches on the subject and on the comparison with research methods used for measuring different skills, related to computer fluency and other educational issues.
