Symposium
Contribution
This paper discusses those types of family and community participation in schools and will share which types have major influence on students’ achievement. Benefits of parental involvement are even greater among low income students, members of minority cultures or migrant students. However, this is still a challenge in many European schools working with diversity students. Based on an extensive analysis on European educational systems, secondary analysis of international datasets, and an exhaustive literature review INCLUD-ED provided a new classification of types of family participation. Later, six longitudinal case studies in urban schools containing students with minority background (1 pre-primary and 5 primary schools) were conducted in 5 European countries, to analyze how community involvement contribute to improve learning and foster social cohesion. Data collection included questionnaires for families and students and several qualitative techniques. : Main findings indicated the existence of five types of family and community participation in schools: informative, consultative, decisive, evaluative and educative. The decisive, evaluative and educative types are more likely to have a positive impact on students’ learning. Schools analysed implement these types of family and community participation through specific forms that link to their educational improvements and move to the center minorities’ family participation.
