The purpose of this research is to explain the leadership styles of high school students based on the frames developed by Bolman and Deal (1991). Leadership behaviours are very important in high school years. The high school students develop the fundemental skills and practice each other in the social activities. Many social clubs and activities give opportunities to the high school students in order to improve their skills. Today’s leader students will be future’s leader in society. Many small, middle and large size public institutions and non-govenmenet istitutions (NGO) need leaders in order to manage better their institutions. For his purpose, the researcher seeks an answer that what kind of leadership styles have high school students? As sub-research questions, do leadersip styles differ to the students’ grade level in the high schools? Is there a significant difference between the leadership styles of females and male students?
Bolman and Deal’s leadership styles were based on four frameworks: structural leadership, political leadership, symbolic leadership and human resources leadership. The researcher seeks an answer how much of the responses differ – their variability, how closely some responses are related to others and how responses vary within certain demographic variables (Krathwohl, 1998).
Structural leadership is mostly based on goals, strategies, environment, technology and people. Human resources leadership is basen on social, selfesteem, self-actualization, energy, ideas. Political leadership is based on a complex variety of individuals and group interests. The question is how does each group show its own preferences and use power to get what it wants? Finally, symbolic leadership is explained by symbols, values, rituels, ceremonies and assumptions.
Deal and Peterson (1994) states that school leaders adopt one of the leaders styles. Each style has strong and weak ways. However, leaders and school leaders adopt one of the styles dominontly that unveil her/his leadership style. Each organization may adapt different kind of leadership styles. It means that organizations need to have leaders who have differenet kind of leadership styles.
