Contribution
This paper aims at understanding the relation between New Education promoters and Rousseau at the time of building new teaching methods and a school reform. Is Rousseau considered as a precursor, an initiator or just a reference among others? Do some reformers reject his educational conceptions? In order to answer these questions, we will proceed to a detailed analysis of the New Education Fellowship journals – Pour l’Ere Nouvelle, Das Werdende Zeitalter and The New Era (1920 – 1940) – where some of the most famous promoters of the New Education write. Within these numerous pages will try to identify which reformers quote Rousseau, how do they refer to him, how do they use his ideas and concepts to justify their reform claims or, at the opposite, to differ from them. This paper contributes to a better understanding of the New Education basic claims; studying their filiation to previous thinkers like Rousseau helps to understand the importance of concepts such as nature, liberty, individuality that are still present in the nowadays’ pedagogy.
