Contribution
The present communication will try to avail an empirical scope to debate the property of metaphors in the school method (Vincent), school culture (Julia), school model (Nóvoa) and modern school grammar (Tyack, D.; Cuban, L.), covering, for this, sources dated from the fifties in the XIX century, more specifically Relatórios do Estado da Instrução Publica da Província de São Paulo [São Paulo Provincial Public Education Status Report] presented every year to the Provincial President by the Inspector Provincial Public Education General Inspector, Diogo de Mendonça Pinto. The inspector’s reports cover aspects regarding the manner in which education expanded, especially concerning the criteria for school creation and maintenance. Besides, they cover information on the existing student numbers, on the class methods chosen, presenting aspects, including, furniture and tools available in the classroom. It is possible, through this documentation, to discover education routines, practices and social representation concerning school life. Such sources provide us indications concerning the methods and reading and writing teaching techniques chosen at the schools. It will be possible to discover how the State interacts with the job of education.
