Symposium
Contribution
The role of international organizations in the diffusion, and even imposition, of a certain conception of the school – conception grasped scientifically by concepts like modèle scolaire, forme scolaire, grammar of schooling – is considered to be essential today. The IBE was a forerunner of such organizations. It has promoted, for a very long time, international cooperation and elaboration of common ways of developing schools and instruction. On which lines did this international cooperation function? Which models were proposed? How were they negotiated? Who dominated? How were the different national and cultural viewpoints integrated? We will provide elements to answer such questions by looking at the metamorphoses of the IBE from its foundation as private organization in 1925 to its integration into UNESCO in 1968. On the basis of voluminous archives (private archives, Archives Institut Rousseau, archives of Jean Piaget Foundation, Society of Nations, UNESCO, and above all the IBE), different in nature (private and institutional correspondence, newsletters, grey literature, international inquiries), we will analyze how the inquiries and recommendations of the IBE concerning school knowledge and disciplines (more particularly history, mother tongue and second language as disciplines linked to national and cultural identity) were negotiated by the different international actors.
