Session Information
99 SES 06, Educational Research Capacity-building - How Do Institutions and Professional Associations Support 'New' Researchers to Gain Access to the International Research Scene?
WERA Symposium
Contribution
Workforce renewal in educational research is often experienced as a matter of the everyday work of expert academics in supervising new doctoral researchers and mentoring
colleagues to publication, achieving grant success and career advice and promotion. Yet much of this important work is privatized, haphazard, and too often ineffectual for those
researchers whose position on their career pathway does not exactly match with the advice to which s/he have access at a particular time.
WERA has a strong commitment to the support and advancement of educational research around the globe, and to the development of strong international research agendas and programs that will enable personal enrichment and global enhancement of education – including capacity building and the support of excellent up-and coming researchers.
The proposed symposium will focus on these questions: Can our association of international associations learn from each other about ways in which access to the international research scene can be facilitated for our new colleagues? How do or research programs develop international connections and agendas that recognize and accommodate international differences to work with and across these in the production of new knowledge that is of benefit to all? What stories of success can be shared across our member nations? How is the experience of research capacity building understood from the point of view of institutions, research mentors and mentees?
This symposium will center on the experience of successful collaborative programs of educational research that have taken the idea of capacity building seriously. A group leader or an early career researcher from each group are invited to speak about their own experience and the factors they see as having brought about their success as a capacity building
collaborative.
