European Research Council (ERC - Consolidator Grant) project RESADL (Reimagining Schools Through a Post-Disaster Lens) - 3 positions
Application deadline: 8 June 2026 - 23:59 (Europe/Zagreb)
This is an exciting opportunity for three postdoctoral researchers to join an ambitious multi-disciplinary research project that reimagines schools through a post-disaster lens. Funded by a European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant, the project is led by Dr Karin Doolan, a sociologist of education based at the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Croatia.
The project examines schools in six European countries severely affected by disasters in the recent past: Spain and Germany by floods in 2024, Slovenia and Greece by floods in 2023, and Turkey and Croatia by earthquakes in 2023 and 2020. The project asks: What school roles are suspended, enacted, contested and imagined in post-disaster settings, and what accounts for their convergences or divergences across multiple post-disaster sites in Europe?
This timely research explores not only how schools respond in the aftermath of disaster, but also how disasters expose underlying assumptions about what schools are for. By examining both the enacted and suppressed roles of schools in post-disaster settings, the project opens space for reimagining schools for more uncertain futures, particularly in the context of the climate crisis.
The successful candidates will join the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, one of Croatia’s leading public research institutes, and a vibrant interdisciplinary environment, where researchers from sociology, psychology, political science, education, anthropology and related fields collaborate on socially relevant topics including education, youth, inequality, urban development, gender, migration, sustainability and science policy. The Institute is strongly internationally oriented, participating in major European research networks and projects, while also maintaining a visible role in public debate and policy in Croatia.
The positions offer the opportunity to contribute to internationally significant research with strong societal relevance, collaborate across countries and disciplines, and be part of an intellectually dynamic ERC-funded team.
