Annual Report 2017, Copenhagen

1. Overview of N18 Activities in ECER 2017

The general feel is that this has been a very successful conference for NW18. Some key points to note here:

  • Increase in numbers attending sessions (there were 48 attending the first session and average attendance was ~32).
  • A broad range of countries represented – good geographical spread.
  • Participants engaged with sessions and some good discussion/debate has taken place.
  • The group think session with Mogens Kirkeby was very successful. It was well attended (around 50 people attending on the day) and stimulated some positive discussion. The session was also periscoped and has ~90 viewers to date.
  • Joint sessions (with networks 8, 9 & 27) worked well and were well received.
  • Chairs of sessions did a good job in managing time and facilitating debates.
  • N18 was the most active network on Twitter on the ECER2017 hashtag.
  • 27 people attended the network meal on Wednesday evening.
  • Around 45 people attended the network meeting.
  • New conveners were added to the team.

2. What worked well in ECER 2017

  • High quality of papers.
  • Good venue – easy access to the city.

3. Future plans for N18

Within the network meeting, members discussed future directions for the network. Key points are:

  • N18 were successful last year in applying for EERA funding to run a specialist symposium on ethics, voice and values. This is set to take place in October in Cork, Ireland.
  • We will look to feed discussion from the symposium back into the conference via presentations/sessions in Bolzano next year.
  • We will look to embrace alternatives to delivering sessions (e.g. round tables, debates, practical sessions…).
  • Possibility of applying for a capacity building workshop in ECER 2018, possibly with a theory focus (around a key issue).
  • More joint sessions are planned.
