Annual Report 2013, Istanbul
NW 22: Research in Higher Education had altogether 139 presentations of which 120 were papers, 12 posters, 2 symposia, 1 roundtable and 4 research workshops. 22 participants withdrew their accepted contribution.
Presentations focussed on the following themes: Teaching, learning and assessment in higher education (37 papers, 6 posters & 1 research workshop); Academic work and professional development (22 papers, 2 posters, 1 symposia & 2 research workshop); Inclusion and diversity in higher education settings (17 papers); Employability and transition to work of higher education graduates (18 papers, 3 posters & 1 symposium); Policy, management and governance in higher education (10 papers & 1 research workshop); as well as 18 presentations that did not fit to these topics.
A joint roundtable was organised with NW 9: Assessment, Evaluation, Testing and Measurement.
Scientific level of sessions varied but in general was good. Quite a number of doctoral students were amongst the presenters. Typically there were 10-20 participants in each session which guaranteed interactive discussions. The NW dinner proved to be a success as about 20 members participated in the dinner.
There were three concerns during the conference: (1) chairs in the sessions did not always remember to fill in the session return slip and there were some confusion on how much time to be given for each presentation; we wondered if in future years there could be an option to fill session return slips in on line? Then if someone forgets at the time they can still do it before leaving the conference (2) there were more ‘no shows’ than in the previous years; (3) Network members raised the issue of spoken language as both non-native and native English speakers found at times some challenges to understand presentations and/or discussions.
