The defence in the doctoral journey is the final assessment of the thesis. The thesis is assessed firstly by the supervisors and then by examiners in a ‘defence’. It is an important stage in the doctoral process. However, since many doctoral candidates are unfamiliar with how such events are conducted, this is an opportunity for everyone to see, learn and experience what actually happens!
For this reason, the Postgraduate Network together with Dr. Shosh Leshem (Oranim Academic College of Education, and Haifa University) and Prof. Emeritus Vernon Trafford (Anglia Ruskin University) and is organizing a live defence ‘event’ at the Emerging Researchers´ Conference at ECER 2013, Bahçeşehir University, Turkey. Their book Stepping stones to Achieving Your Doctorate (Open University Press, 2008) draws on their extensive international experience of doctoral supervision and examining.
This session will give Ph.D. candidates who are approaching, or in the final phase of their studies, a chance to experience a defence and receive feedback on it.
The session will contain three parts:
- Presentation: Introduction to the doctoral defence process
- Two public defences of a doctoral research outline
- Presentation: Putting it all together: the written and the oral defence.
If you have completed 80% or more of your thesis and are interested in applying to present it, then please follow the guidelines on the next page. Submission time ends May 31. All submissions will be considered and two will be selected for presentation and defence in this session. If you would like to discuss your proposal before submission then please contact: vntrafford@aol.com and shosh-l@zahav.net.il
