Must Sees in Hamburg

The Michaeliskirche is Hamburg’s landmark and widely known as ‘Michel’. Climb up the tower of the huge baroque church and enjoy the great view of Hamburg and its surroundings. www.st-michaelis.de

Visit Hamburg's new landmark: The Elbphilharmonie
The public viewing platform, the “Plaza”, is open to everyone and offers a breathtaking 360° view of the city and the harbour. Not only a must see for the architectural enthusiasts amongst you. You can purchase your tickets online to avoid standing in line (2 € booking fee per ticket) or you can get your tickets (for free) right at the venue.

Enjoy a cocktail with a view

Stroll through the Portuguese district and enjoy some authentic tapas!
Just behind the harbour lies a neighbourhood called “the Portuguese quarter”. Since the 1960s it is known as the centre of Hamburg's sizeable Portuguese and southern European community. There you can enjoy some delicious Portuguese seafood, the best Pastel de Natas and authentic Portuguese tapas.

Go see the the Water Light Concerts in Planten un Blomen
During summertime, the park Planten un Blomen, which is very close to the conference venue, starts its light console in the water and plays music to accompany the spectacle. It starts at 10 pm and entry is free!

Relax at Hamburg’s unique beach - the Elbstrand
Although Hamburg has no seaside, the river Elbe offers a beach west of the harbour. Take a ferry of the public transport system from Landungsbrücken to Ovelgönne/Museumshafen and you’ll find the beach by walking in direction out of the town. It is a very nice place to relax whilst enjoying the atmosphere of the container harbour.

One of our favourite ways to start a Saturday morning: Strolling through Flohschanze
In the lively Schanzenviertel, a former working-class neighbourhood, the yard of the former slaughtery house, ‘Schlachthof’, is transformed into a flea market every Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm. From there you take a stroll around Schulterblatt: the street with the curious name (‘shoulder blade’) offers numerous cafes, restaurants, vivid night life, and some nice independent designer shops.

The “miracle of modern technics”: Alter Elbtunnel
Connecting both shores of the Elbe, the Elbtunnel was built in 1911. Once known as a ‘miracle of modern technics’, today it serves mainly as a tourist attraction and helps the people to escape from the city centre into Hamburg’s green south. Visit during the weekend when car access is denied – it’s free for pedestrians and bikes www.hamburg.de/alter-elbtunnel

To complete your Hamburg experience: Start your day at the Fischmarkt (fish market)
Visit the Fischmarkt on Sunday morning, a lively market with maritime flair where you can find a large variety of fresh fish and seafood but also all kinds of other goods. Every Sunday from 5a.m. – 9.30a.m. at the bank of the river Elbe between Hafenstraße and Große Elbstraße.
