EERA Sessions

Wednesday 19 August

The European Research Council (ERC), set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organization for excellent frontier research. The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, based on scientific excellence.
The aim of this ERC session is to provide information about the ERC’s funding opportunities and encourage researchers to apply, with a particular focus on the education research community.
Participants will have the chance to ask questions during the Q&A.

Educational research associations occupy a critical position in shaping the conditions, capacities, and future trajectories of the discipline - locally, nationally, and internationally. This role has become increasingly significant as education research is conducted within a context marked by political volatility and extremism, financial constraint, geopolitical instability, and intensifying scrutiny of universities and academic contributions.
This session will examine the strategic role of educational research associations through an analysis of the challenges faced in a range of national contexts and look for similarities and differences.

PISA rankings spotlighted Finnish education in the early 2000s and this fame has endured even after declining results. While many policymakers and some researchers were concerned on how to explain the PISA results, difficult questions on Finnish comprehensive school were overlooked. The embedded methodological nationalism in PISA rankings obscures contexts of learning, which would be important for research-based understanding.
In this special session, panellists discuss how the ‘Finnish success story’ narrative shaped the understandings of policymakers, researchers, and the public.

The session will also invite participants to imagine and reflect on what future Sámi education could look like, considering questions of language vitality, cultural continuity, and innovative pedagogical approaches.

This EERA Panel/Session marks the official launch of a new peer-reviewed, Diamond Open-Access journal dedicated to emerging researchers within the European Educational Research Association. The journal builds directly on the intellectual community of the Emerging Researchers’ Conference (ERC) and, for the first time, creates a structured and sustainable publication pathway for early-career scholars within EERA’s research ecosystem.
By launching this Journal, EERA affirms its commitment not only to research quality but to intergenerational continuity, epistemic plurality, and equitable participation in knowledge production. The session invites Council members, network convenors, and the wider EERA community to reflect collectively on the journal’s long-term role in strengthening a more inclusive and sustainable European research landscape.
