Contribution

Chair: Ingólfur Ásgeir Jóhannesson, University of Akureyri Discussant: Johann Muller, University of Capetown In this symposium we bring together researchers participating in a European Union research project on professional knowledge in restructuring welfare state institutions in Europe (PROFKNOW). From 2004 to the end of 2007 eight European universities were engaged in a collaborative effort to investigate the work and life of professionals in education and health care in times of institutional restructuring of the welfare state. The work of almost 30 researchers from different parts of Europe is now in a process of research communication based on research reports available at www.profknow.net. Here we will present reflections on our research project in different ways: 1. Comparing contexts across nations: on the politics of comparative research and globalisation 2. Gender issues in an era of educational restructuring 3. Comparing discourses of professionalism in teaching and nursing 4. Theoretical and methodological issues in research communication and globalisation This symposium is recognising the impact of Fernando Hernandez and his colleagues at the University of Barcelona, in its development. However, the current organising are taking full responsibility for the mistakes in the current version.

Method

The current study is based on comparative studies in seven countries using policy discourses, ethnographies and life histories in fourteen multicultural urban sites, and surveys to 8 800 nurses and teachers. The reflections presented here are based on notes from consortium meetings plus analyses of research reports and other research texts and materials from the projects

Expected Outcomes

We are presenting conclusions on gender issues and governance - comparing nursing and teaching in different national contexts and predominant discourses. This is combined with reflections on international comparisons and globalisation, underlining the importance of reflexivity in research cooperation in a European Educational Research Area (EERA)
