Contribution
In a series of widely publicised reports a number of influential international organisations including the OECD and the World Bank have argued that the emergence of what they refer to as ‘knowledge economy’ calls for a radical rethinking of the role of schools and the curriculum that they offer. In this paper I will argue that these proposals take little account of the epistemological and sociological issues involved in producing and acquiring powerful knowledge. This critique will be the basis for developing an alternative approach to the role of schools that recognises their unique role in enabling young people to acquire the kind of knowledge that will equip them for the uncertainties of an increasingly global future.
