In September 2001 a new Reorganization of the Junior High School Curriculum was implemented in Portugal for the students that began the first six years of schooling. This reorganization will include the 7th, 8th and 9th grade in 2002/2003, 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 respectively. Flexible Management of the Curriculum appears with the objective to transform school into an institution, which should be responsible for assuring full personal development to all children and adolescents in a complementary perspective as far as the family and the society are concerned. Hence the possibility of a flexible curriculum adapted to the specific contexts of every school and every class. To analyse students' perceptions regarding the Supported Study and its benefits for the Portuguese language and Maths, a study was carried out using self-concept instruments (SDQII - Self-Description Questionnaire), an evaluation / diagnose instrument for the subjects' study and learning strategies (Learning and Study Strategies Inventory - LASSI) and the Classroom Environment Scale (CES) to observe students' perceptions of the social climate of their classroom. It is important to note that the study was implemented during an experimental phase of the project Flexible Management of the Curriculum in 1999/2000.
