This paper is a contribution to the EERA networks on ICT and Education. It focuses on research methodologies that have been used for analyses of computer conferences. It is based on reviews of previous research in the area. The paper draws attention to the characteristics of virtual education and communication, and specifically to the analytical methods and tools that have been used in the research. The paper consists of three sections. First, it discusses the main terms communication and interaction, how the terms have been used in research on computer conferences; secondly, it identifies and discusses research measures that have been of interest in quantitative and qualitative approaches; And thirdly, it offers a model for doing research on computer conferences. Overall, the paper contributes to debates about online communication and educational computer conferences.
