The agenda of secondary education to meet the Personal and Social Development (PSD) needs of pupils is achieved through effective management and leadership. This responsibility rests with head teachers, senior managers and other promoted staff and relies on their ability to forge a collaborative approach. The skills involved in this undertaking include good time management, multi- tasking, prioritising, negotiating, motivating and delegating. The emotional intelligence perspective informs this process. This paper explores, analyses and presents material that has been developed from a CPD research project that gathered information over a twelve-month period from two inner city schools in Glasgow, Scotland. It used systematic observation and questioning of teachers involved in the delivery of the PSD programme. The output of this investigation includes video material, a management in-tray exercise and an innovative desk planner. These materials will be used to exemplify the findings of the study.
