This paper will report on the findings of two research projects conducted in the UK which have examined teacher's views of the conditions which need to be created in order to include pupils with special educational needs in mainstream schools. Both projects conducted surveys of teachers working in mainstream schools to gauge their perceptions of the challenges which would be presented by transferring pupils from segregated special school provision into mainstream schools. Observations of inclusive practice in a number of schools revealed anomalies between teacher perceptions and the reality of inclusive classroom practice. The paper will present a potential model for supporting teachers in the development of inclusion based upon work emanating from the research.
