Contribution
Plus, a contribution on EIn-Service-Training for Educators (of Primary and Secondary Education Schools) In the last years many national and international conferences focused on environmental problems and on environmental education. These matters present many controversial issues, interconnected, requiring a sound science-based knowledge and research to be understood, investigated and taught. As example we quote the case of "sustainable development": often this ticklish subject is taught in school and "recipes" to achieve it are provided with. But this subject is not a trivial one: it has put to evidence in a workshop held in Genoa, Italy, in November 2001, that it needs an analysis based on scientific parameters to state which and how much development can be put into practice before reaching the "no return point"; beyond that point environment will be forever irreparably damaged Is it possible nowadays to carry out such an analysis? Is speaking about sustainable development meaningful or is it only a way to "exert undue influence" over citizens to pursue economic or political purposes or other ones? Is it possible, perhaps, to obtain any result on a very small scale (local level)? If so, how is it possible to transfer to a larger scale? Which actions to participate to decision-making on environment, taking into account that we are living in a globalised society? Is it possible to clear up the confusion concerning the intrinsic complexity of environment? Or should we use only a very limited and rough approach, being aware that each model will not interpret the reality and that any, even weighted, decision will neglect important aspects of events? Which changes make an environment recover utopian? "Let nature do" is a good suggestion or, sometimes, a human intervention would be better? Which are implications of the previous questions on citizens' education? Which guidelines may followed for an environmental education aiming critical and respectful of individuals and of their social, historic, cultural context? Which researches are on this field? The proposed workshop should involve researchers, practicians, teachers and teachers' students in a debate about environmental education, comparing methods, projects, experiences and researches. The purpose is to improve the quality of environmental education at various level, favouring an international cooperation.
