Contribution
The essential goal of training and education in schools is to train individuals who will contribute to the welfare and development of the community. The innovation process, which is the use of high technology today, is the most important source for development and advancement. Individuals who are open to this innovation process must be trained in the training and education system. The innovation system can be defined as producing new products, services and processes by using the knowledge produced as a result of scientific studies. To have knowledge is not enough. Individuals who have got creative thinking skills and know how to apply this knowledge to benefit the community need to be trained. The way to develop creative thinking skills is far beyond learning by heart. A tremendous amount of knowledge is being produced everyday in physics, chemistry and biology sciences, however, it is impossible to give even half of this knowledge to the students during their high school education period. If this knowledge is to be given, it is presently done by expecting the students to learn by heart. As a result of this pressure, the student only perform to pass the class. The student cannot be expected to use this knowledge creatively. All these concepts are valid for environmental education. Therefore, in secondary and high school education I maintain that in place of teaching in great detail and as a consequence expecting the student memorise, the followings should be realised as we do in Private Darussafaka High School. -The basic principles should be taught -Their questioning ability of these principles should be developed -They should be acquainted with the industries, industrial chemicals and wastes -They should be acquainted with the university labs and libraries -They should be given internet facilities - They should be acquainted with the scientific congresses - They should be acquainted with the nongovernmental organisations dealing with environment and take part in them -They should prepare scientific projects to reuse the wastes and enter project competitions -Laboratory and research facilities should be provided -Communication with the national and international research institutes should be realised -Opportunity should be given to take part in international projects such as "Europe at School", "Young Reporters of Environment" to establish scientific friendship with students of other nationalities and the most important of all these, teachers who are open to innovation and changes should be trained.
