This paper describes the work on the Swedish Science Curriculum for comprehensive school during 1998 through 2000. This is shown as a clash of "curriculum emphases". The background is the Swedish National Curriculum stating the reproduction of democracy as the prime educational objective, to be pursued at all instances of school education in Sweden. At the same time, however, there is an uncertainty as to education leading to a citizen-role or a consumer-role. The paper is showing the inconsistencies which thus have been built into the curriculum, and discusses an alternative, based on the description of human existence by Emmanuel Levinas and Hannah Arendt.
