We have been completing a research about the phenomena of violence " at work " for more than three years now. This study is based on more than 1200 questionnaires and hundreds face to face interviews. It took place in two stages, the first, from July 1999 till September 2000, concerned people who work in the French institutions (social security doctors, controllers and factory social inspectors). The second was led with more than 1000 employees all trough out the Aquitaine area from November 2000 to the first term 2002. The objective of the first part of this inquiry is to understand better this phenomenon, through a professional point of view. To identify if there are a social, organizational and personal conditions which influence the types, frequency and duration of bullying and negative behaviors in the work place. It was above all a question of defining and checking the nature, the definition and the quantifications of this phenomenon by working particularly on the profiles of the authors and the victims including medical aspects. This analyze also conducted us to work on the legal aspects and anti-harassment policies. Concerning the companies' profiles, we measured various impacts as the organizational factors of climate, structure and context, such as management practices, etc. in the demonstrations of violence at work (Mancel, Montoya, 200). Nevertheless, this first step towards awareness about the issue opened other numerous questions because violence at work do not only has to be considered as an occasional problem and linked to individuals' positions in a company. It is as well a structural phenomenon with various factors that take root in individual, socioeconomic and organizational issues. The second stage allowed us to measure the feeling of violence of the employees in companies and to compare it with the initially questioned institutional perception. One of the essential purposes of this second stage is to refine the profiles of the authors and the victims by measuring as well the influence of the socio-professional status. One of the aspects of the profile shows a relation between the school level (diploma) and the fact to be a victim of harassment at work. Consequently, our method aim to design assessing indicators that will be used as measuring tools to anticipate challenging situations. The results of this survey (Mancel, Montoya, 2002) lead us to open up this research at the national and European level in a third period. Consequently, these results should allow us to design at an inter-agencies level preventive actions, to grow awareness and inform the various professional branches involved. Those informative and educational preventive actions should be organized in the professional training program (for students in professional training and for adults in continuing education), because it is a matter of giving to them the relevant means to discuss and think about the violence at work issues. It could be too a possibility of acting at legal level (cf. the law of social modernization on " moral harassment " for example). Key words: harassment, violence, work, training program.
