The higher education agenda over the last three years, particularly in England, has focused on the enhancement of teaching and learning through a variety of mechanisms and initiatives identified by the Government and its relevant agencies. The proposed round table will consider how some of these initiatives have been addressed through a variety of approaches. Five papers with the common theme of 'Professional Education, Academic Development and Higher Education' (HE), will be given. Each paper will identify a specific area of concern. Paper 1: The impact of academic developers' values on learning enhancement. This paper considers the impact of the values held by academic developers in the delivery of professional development in higher education. Particular emphasis is given to the new academic entering HE and being involved in professional development activities. The analysis focuses on the notion of collective value and the impact these have upon development. Paper 2: Teaching Observation and Professional EducationThis paper examines the notion of consistency in teaching observation, as their use increases in higher education. The paper raise questions such as 'how do observers apply the criteria of observation to standards and quality measures?' and 'do observers relate the observation of teaching to the development of the scholarship of teaching?' Paper 3: The Scholarship of Learning: a new professional development tool. This paper re-examines the arguments and implications surrounding the developing conceptions of the scholarship of teaching within higher education, and argues that considering the scholarship of learning creates a more effective professional development tool. Paper 4: Professional Education and the AcademicThis paper examines two theoretical models of professional education, that of Malcolm and Zukas (2001), and Macfarlane (2004), as a means of constructing an analytical framework for the analysis of Masters level programmes offered to academics as a means of enhancing teaching and learning. Examination of Masters programmes forms the empirical basis of the discussion.Paper 5:The academic, the library, and information staff in the e-learning environment. This paper considers the impact of a range of e-provision by ten library and information (LI) services on teaching and learning in HE. The research has identified the nature of LI's contribution to teaching and learning by systematically collecting evidence of the impact of e-provision and the process leading to that impact. The data suggests that collaboration between academics and LI services is essential as is a shift in attitude and behaviour by both academics and LI specialists.
