The focus of the paper is the educational and social status of deaf students in a public school following a merge of The Special School for Deaf Pupils and one of the public schools in Reykjavik. Background: The paper builds on data from an ongoing study of the education of deaf students, age 6 - 16 years. The Educational Service Center in Reykjavik asked The University Resear Centre for a reasearch to evaluate and see how the merger was going on, what the status was for the deaf students in their new enviroment, how the parents felt about the merge and how the employees of both schools felt about the changes.Iceland had one special school for deaf students but fewer students were enrolled the last years mainly because of the students legal rights to attend the public school in their school district. The Educational Service Center in Reykjavik then decided to merge the special school with a public school in Reykjavik and that the School for deaf students would be a special unit within the school. This was done in thenotion of inclusinon and inclusive education. Icelandic and sign language would be equally important in the school. The deaf students would intergrate within regular classes but in the process there would be flexibility based on each students terms. The main goal of our study is to describe, analyze and assess the education and feelings of the deaf students following the merge of the two schools. We did this by questioning how parents and employees felt about the merge, to see how the employees rolls had changed and how the school work was planned, based on the Individual Educational Plan, Class and School curriculum. What possibilities are there within the school to make it possible to let the two languages (sign language and icelandic) be equal and how are they working on it. As a theoretical background we use the social constructive perspectiv. This paper draws on findings from the study which began in 2002. Both qualitative and quantitavive research methods were used . The qualitative reserch findings rest on data obtained through observations, document analyses and semi structured interviews with teachers, teaching assistants, school managers and students. The quantitative reserch findings rest on data obtained through questionaries, one made for school personal and the other for parents. We seek to answer questions such as how the deaf students feel in their new enviroment, how are the employees prepared to respond to deaf students? What is the status of sign language within the school? Is the culture of the deaf students threatend in this new enviroment? And what can be learned from this study in order to improve the status of deaf students within the school?
