The movement of Australian students undertaking postgraduate programs across state boundaries is relatively limited. Students tend to complete their undergraduate programs in the city where they attended high school and, if they seek a postgraduate qualification, often complete these in the same city, although not necessarily at the same university. There is even less mobility across international borders, often because study overseas is a hugely expensive proposition and Australian students have not yet become accustomed to beginning, or continuing their careers, carrying the huge financial burden associated with student loans. In this paper, I consider the extent to which it might be possible to establish agreements between universities that would facilitate credit transfer and shared enrolments in postgraduate coursework and research higher degree programs. There are numerous issues that complicate ease of credit transfer including university- specific rules governing residency, program rules that constrain course/subject flexibility, and the considerable variation in the orientation of postgraduate programs across education faculties and schools. In the presentation I will present some findings of an exploration of professional portability of credentials and credit transfer agreements from an Australian point of view and outline some ways in which these might be achieved.
