In the Province of Quebec, History of Education research moved from the study of structures of the education system to the micro analysis of local power like school boards. The pionneers in that area of research have put emphasis first on the central levels of decision and legislation, a necessary step to understand the evolution of a complex school system based on confessional division between Catholics and Protestants in order to preserve their linguistic identities. The researchers have also focused their interest on the majority sector : the system responsible of the catholic Francophones. Interestingly, recent work examined identity questions from religious to ethnic and gendered one, in a way that impulsed and asked for more historical investigation. Nowadays, it is possible to integrate those sectorial progresses and new perspectives, often realized in monographic works on an ethnic or religious group, or in a gender approach, in a collective work done by a multidisciplinary team. Using new tools and the most innovative theorethical framework, this team is now challenging the writing of an historical Atlas about Education in Quebec. It will be part of the collection Atlas historique du Québec, published by Centre interdisciplianire d'études québécoises (CIEQ). The co- directors of this volume L'École au Québec : éducation, identités et cultures/ School in Québec Province: Education, Identities and Cultures) will present the framework and orientations of that vast project. They will also illustrate some of the new files and fields that will be carved out and the tools in term of cartography that will be used to renew interpretations. This great project gives also the opportunity to the specialists in that area to aware the autorities of the importance to preserve archives and all school patrimony of the Province.
