Dewey Square is a modern jazz standard, written by Charlie Parker in the late 1940ies. The proposal of this presentation is to look to jazz improvisation in general and to key institutions in the jazz world like the jam session for examples that might support investigation of professional improvisational competences also in the world of schooling and teaching. A recurrent motif is whether improvisation can be seen as a counterpoint to the focus on the pre-active preparation by teachers in theories of teaching and pedagogy, including in german and nordic didaktik/didaktikk.
The quotes on top of the abstract indicate some of the keywords and scholars within the field of education that will be revisited in the seach for explicit or implicit reference to improvisation in relation to teaching and pedagogy. As a part of the transatlantic comparison of curriculum theory and didaktikk a number of researchers have focused on the key position of the professional teacher in the didactical tradition, and the understanding of teaching and teacher competences here will be compared with motifs from the jazz world like jamming, repertoire and standards, the professional flexibility that come from the sophisticated ability to play by ear.
The presentation will be based on an article in norwegian that is to be published this year in a book on "Improvisasjon" ed. by Bjørn Alterhaug and Henning Sommerro and Ketil Steinsholt. The full article in norwegian can be obtained from Harald.Jarning@lu.hio.no.
