Description: Narrative inquiry and its various possibilities in enhancing research-basedunderstanding of experience are popular topics in current qualitativeeducational research. This "narrative turn" also highlights the question ofthe role of a researcher in the research process based on stories and storytelling. I will examine and discuss the tasks and the positions theresearcher may have "in the process" of the narrative research. What arethe effects of methods used in gathering the materials and the form of thematerials on the realization of the research design and researcher practice?
Methodology: The presentation is based on materials that will be collected in an ongoingresearch project on international working experiences of universityteachers. In gathering materials also new methods will be experimented with. The materials will include a narrative interview face-to-face and on-lineover a net phone, a net diary and a narrative group conversation. Materialsgathering will create different situational and relational contexts for theresearcher and the participants, and the form and contents of the narrativesbecause of varying gathering methods.
Conclusions: So far, the researcher has developed a pre-understanding of a narrativeresearch process on the basis of theoretical-methodological literature (seethe list of references). It is expected that the materials gathering, as acontextualized activity and shared experience with the participants, is achallenging part of the research process for the researcher. It will producethe "field texts" but also professional reflections of the researcher andnegotiations with the participants on how to continue in the knowledgeprocess: how the "research texts" will be co-constructed.
