Description: This paper will consider the life of Medd Mary, alongside other women architects whose special interest was the design of schools for children during the 20th century. These women transformed 'knowledge' of pedagogy and visions of schooling into material reality. Their iconic school designs contributed to the history of education and stimulated shifts in theory and practice. The paper will consider the following question. Was Medd unique in her practice and approach or did her style reflect a particularly female characteristic that women were able to bring to the profession? School teachers of younger children were predominantly female in the UK and across Europe. Architecture, on the other hand, was a male dominated profession. What was the nature of the relationship between women such as Medd and those who had a vision of what education should be and how that could be realised in the design of school buildings ?
The case of Mary Medd will be considered alongside other female practitioners who were considered special and distinctive in their time including Wivi Lönn from Finland
Methodology: Primary sources will include the Medd papers held at the Architecture and Building Archive at the Institute of Education London.
Secondary Sources will be examined to contextualize with regard to other female designers of Schools
Conclusions: Mary Medd's approach was pioneering and distinctive in that it sought ways to transform what was observable in the intended and actual interaction between pupils and teachers in schools, into material contexts that reflected and enhanced pedagogy. The conclusions will focus on why this was so and whether the female character of the primary school teaching profession contributed to the development of this special relationship.
