Description: The importance given to research in the training of university teaching staff contrasts with the lack of adequate attention to their pedagogical training. In fact, this has traditionally been a poorly structured activity, characterised by its haphazard nature and lack (or even absence) of rigour. The current social environment, combined with the challenge of integrating the Spanish university system into the European Higher Education Area, emphasises the urgency of improving the quality of teaching and giving more attention to the teaching staff's professional qualifications.
There is, therefore, a pressing need to restore the status of the university lecturers' teaching function and redefine their professional task in the information society. The full integration of the Spanish system into the European Higher Education Area entails the adoption of a new education model focused on the student's learning - instead of on the lecturer's teaching or on the number of teaching hours, as has traditionally been the case in Spanish higher education. This evolution demands competent professionals, able not only to teach but also to organise, guide and supervise, and open to new professional perspectives and training fields so as to increase the level of international competitiveness of our universities.
The proposed research aims at contributing to this goal by offering lecturers on-line training opportunities that will allow them the chance to acquire new knowledge, skills and abilities useful in the performance of their teaching activity within our society, characterised by a high level of technological development. The main objectives are: to describe lecturers' expectations vis-à-vis the process of convergence with Europe; to find out the training needs resulting from that integration as perceived by teachers working in the different fields, professional levels and higher education establishments; finally, to create an on-line training program that responds to those expectations and needs.
