When I do research on music I want to get a holistic picture of music in cultural life in order to understand its meaning, use and function and factors like the progress of musical sound in relation to worldview, ideology, and spirituality.This goals puts other demands on research than the so-called "traditional" way of studying music peaces as products or things and the results is not presented as one general truth. In this paper my objective is to challenge the methodology of music research by focusing on the study of music not as an object but on music as subject. I also want to try to define a method of research when studying musical contexts, musiciking and musicitianing.My research questioning My question: Is it possible to define travelling and musicking as a method for research when music is studied in context? I started to study the context of certain composers of classical music and later I extended my studies to include a group of people or a culture. The last ten years my focus has been on indigenous peoples of the world. I live in the area of the Sami - people of northern Scandinavia and Russia and I have been travelling in Oceania for to study the Maori and Polynesian music traditions, too (Ericsson, 2003,; 2007).When I'm researching I want to present a holistic picture of music in cultural life and of living at the same time, in order to understand its meaning, use and function, and the factors like the progress of musical sound in relation to worldview, ideology, and spirituality (Eriksson 2004). My research is not focused on music as an object or a fixed product and the results can't be presented as the only truth.Conclusion - The method of travelling and musicking. I want to bring the metaphor "traveller" from not only being a metaphor, but to be a methodology in it self. When listening to performed music in context the focus of the research is not music recorded on tape or on sheet, likewise contemporary or ancient, but it is the musicking going on in present time and space.
