Research has shown a strong relation between children's reading habits and reading skills (Elley, 1992; Taube, 1995, PISA, 2004). In particular has the relation between volontary reading of novels and high test results on reading tests been confirmed. It has not been much research on how new reading habits, like reading on the web, relate to reading skills. The research question is: How are reading habits, and especially reading on the web, related to reading test results. Mid Sweden University has organised studies on reading skills among students in Härnösand in Sweden in 2005 and 2006. These studies have included all students in grade 8 in the municipality. The studies have included a reading test and a questionnaire where the students have been asked to give information about themselves, their schooling, their reading habits, and their motivation. Some of the questions have dealt with the students reading habits in general and the amount of time used for reading on the web.The data is analysed from the perspective of how students' reading habits and reading test results relate to each other. In particular is the relation between reading on the web and results on the reading test analysed. The data is also further used to analyse reading and reading habits from a perspective of gender, students' mother tongue and ethnical background.Three instruments have been used: reading test, student list and student questionnaire. The reading test is composed by texts different in character: narrative texts, expository texts and documents. Each text was followed by a number of tasks related to the text, 40 tasks in total. The students were given 40 minutes to complete the test. The student list contained among other things information about the students' age, gender, reasons for absence at the test (when relevant), participation in mother tongue classes, participation in classes in Swedish as a second language and participation in remedial education. The student lists were completed by the teacher in the subject Swedish. The students questionnaire contained a number of questions dealing with among other issues students' first language, best language, most used language in the home, access to newspapers, time spent on watching TV, homework and reading habits. The questionnaire also contained questions about time spent on computers and how often the students read web pages. The questionnaires were completed individually by the students. The surveys were compulsory for all schools with students in grade 8 in the municipality. This means that the surveys are a surveys of the whole population of grade 8 students for that years in the municipality.. The study will give information about how frequent students use computers at home and read on the web. The frequency of computer use and reading on the web will be related to the students results on the reading test. Elley, W.B. (1992) How in the world do students read?
