In school year 1999/2000 Slovenia introduced 9 year elementary school (previously 8 years) in which children enter 1st grade with 6 years of age (previously with 7 years). The new system was introduced gradually from 1999/2000 to 2003/2004. Children who were tested in PIRLS 2006 were in two adjacent grades: some of them were in the 3rd grade of 8 years elementary school ("the last generation" of the old system) and others were in the 4th grade of 9 years elementary school (the new system). They both have the same average age and the two groups were almost of the same size (55% against 45% in the favour of the new system). In this article I would like to present if the prolongation of elementary school in Slovenia has some effect on reading literacy of 10 years old children.
