This paper is (1) a preliminary study of two institutions devoted to the collection and exhibit of a number of travelling attractions, and (2) an exploration of the reasons for establishing them. My interest for the Museo Nazionale Documentario della Giostra e dello Spettacolo Popolare (in Bergantino, Rovigo) and for the Sala dei Ricordi (in Vigone, Torino) is related to fieldwork carried out between 1999 and 2000 among Veneto travelling attractionists. On an occasion I had the opportunity to visit the Museo and to meet and talk with some of the younger members of the local families who had "invented" the local tradition of travelling attractions that transformed the small farming town of Bergantino into the world renown "capital" of travelling attractions, giving also way to a specialized industrial activity. As for the Sala dei Ricordi, I visited it and talked with the owner (this is a private institution unlike the Museo that has been set with public funds) after one student at the University of Turin informed me of it. For the 2007 ECER presentation my aim is to discuss the realization of these projects to preserve the memory and identity of an occupational category, and a minority as well, by comparing the results of such enterprises with my own fieldwork findings and interpretations. Furthermore I will present and discuss the educational projects that explicitly complement the institutions' goals, and point out - among other things - how an emphasis on the past is certainly relevant in terms of the emotional and affective aspects of education but may instead limit a reflective approach aiming to problematize the work and life of travelling attractionists, to underline the change obtaining in society and within this occupational category, and to signal the complex interdependence between the sedentary majority and a nomadic minority.Dundes A., (1989), Folklore Matters, The University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville.
