Considerations about the assessment results of education in art museums - A portrait about observations in the Brazilian context

This paper is an excerpt from dissertation conducted at Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP, with the guidance of Professor Rejane Galvão Coutinho, defended in 2012. The research titled Evaluative processes in cultural mediation - The reflexive position of focused educational assessment practices undertaken for visits by school groups to art museums.

The theoretical part of the research the intersection of the fields of education and art education, especially with regard to non-formal education held in exhibition spaces. This paper presents results of field research that brings qualitative data from observation of some cultural institutions of the city of São Paulo, Brazil.

For the research, interviews were conducted in 2010 with the coordinators responsible for educational programs in four different spaces, trying to recognize the evaluation practices used, the positioning on the issue of assessment, and the strategies employed in this sense.

The museums that were selected for analysis where the ones where it was possible to gather the same objects of study for reading research: a report of the interview conducted with the coordinators of educational programs, and the assessment questionnaire applied to the different subjects involved in cultural mediation that were provided at the meetings. Thus, the analysis will be made on the assessment procedures of the spaces Paço das Artes, Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, Museu Lasar Segall and Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo.

The article proposes a reading of the evaluation topics that are proposed in the questionnaires and forms. The analysis of these forms of assessment will be made in a comparative manner, adopting as a view the individual who is responding to the evaluation. Thus will be considered three different subjects that act on a visit to the museum: the cultural mediator / museum educator, the teacher who is responsible for the group, and the student.

The reading of the data obtained will be made separately for each space, with the presentation of the work done in the institution, so that a comparative examination of the questionnaires used by educational sectors can be conducted.

Method

The interviews with those responsible for the educational programs of the four visited museums configure themselves as moments of dialogue, seen as they are not closed on concepts and closed questions. As a trigger point of the conversation, it was asked of the coordinators to speak of the work done by the educational space, its history and the projects developed there. This strategy was used so the coordinators could have the opportunity to reveal their positions in relation to educational activities and projects developed in the institutions, where there could also be questions around the topic of assessment. The other issues were also relevant points for evaluation practice researched. The main one was referring to meetings that each group of educators accomplished; interested to know their regularity and frequency, how it was conducted, and the subjects involved.

Expected Outcomes

This exploratory research presented in the text has brought on an understanding of how the educational sectors of the city of Sao Paulo are conducting a reflection of the educational activities, and how these practices can influence the process of serving the public. At the end of this journey of visiting the museum spaces, the conversations with the coordinators, and the analysis of the collected material, it was possible to see how the job evaluation can be applied, from the example of these four spaces. It was also possible to signify in practice the theoretical framework that served as the basis of the reflection process. In regards to the work that is done by the educational sectors, it is clear the importance in the evaluation of different points of view who attend the museum: the educator of the institution, the students, and the teacher responsible for the group. As the assessment of cultural mediation is not unidirectional or a measure of acquired knowledge, but an exercise of reflection on the visits, it is believed that listening to the different subjects is extremely important for an effective reflection process. Another point of great relevance is the meetings of the training of the staff, assuming that this is also a space for exchange, dialogue, questionings, training and reframing, of cultural mediation.
