29 SES 12 A, The Benefits of Fostering Critical and Visual Literacy Skills through the Creation and Appraisal of Contemporary Art Practice
Symposium
Contribution
This Symposium brings together educators, researchers and artists. Starting from the idea of contemporay art practice or the contemporary art work as a platform for fostering critical and visual literacy among pupils, or an audience, it confronts perspectives among different European countries and various projects. The authors come from different backgrounds but all of them argue for the importance of considering contemporay art practice to rethink the youth relationship with school, society and themselves.
Three of the papers will present the European Creative Connections project and its impact on both teachers and students. From a database of European artists, the Creative Connections project observed the processes of producing art works, considering contemporary art as a changing lens to rethink ways of thinking, doing and acting within school contexts and initial teacher training. Among other issues, the engagement of students and teachers with the artist's works will be explored as well as the meaning and the demystification of art by the students.
Also directed with contemporary art practice, the last paper will start from the performances and installations of the German artist Tino Seghal to explore the spectator's relationship with the artwork. What to tell and how to introduce a contemporary work to the students are the two main questions that this paper will confront.
