Session Information
ERG SES I 01, Doctoral Defence Workshop
Live defence ‘event’ of a VIVA examination
Contribution
The defence in the doctoral journey is the final assessment of the thesis. The thesis is assessed firstly by the supervisors and then by examiners in a ‘defence’. It is an important stage in the doctoral process. However, since many doctoral candidates are unfamiliar with how such events are conducted, this is an opportunity for everyone to see, learn and experience what actually happens!
For this reason, the Emerging Researchers` Network together with Dr. Shosh Leshem (Oranim Academic College of Education, and Haifa University) and Prof. Emeritus Vernon Trafford (Anglia Ruskin University) is organizing a live defence ‘event’ at the Emerging Researchers´ Conference at ECER 2014, University of Porto, Portugal. Their book Stepping stones to Achieving Your Doctorate (Open University Press, 2008) draws on their extensive international experience of doctoral supervision and examining.
This session will give Ph.D. candidates who are approaching, or in the final phase of their studies, a chance to experience a defence and receive feedback on it.
