Symposium
Contribution
In a globalized world, the processes of cultural exchange are broadened and intensified; identities are multiplied and there is a growing number of those who are concerned with the recognition and appreciation of their own identities. In this scenario, the training of basic education teachers is expected to promote greater awareness of self and others, and also to further research on innovative teaching methods and strategies which are consistent with the principles of a multi/intercultural education. Within a teacher training course in Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo (northern Portugal) students were introduced to the project Creative Connections and tested out some of its materials, and reflected on the following questions: a)the relevance of human rights in today's world , b )how to lead children to a better understanding of the tensions between equality and difference ? c)how to form citizens not only aware of their own rights and duties, but aware of the importance of the exercise of an active citizenship; ? d)how can intercultural education and the arts contribute to civic education? The present communication reflects on teacher-students’ citizenship literacy from data collected in a case study conducted within the subject “Art, Pedagogy and Critical Citizenship”.
