14 SES 07 A, Parental Involvement in Schools in Different National Contexts – Future Challenges for Practice and Research
Symposium
Contribution
In Germany parents and their cooperation with school as well as their involvement in schools has become an important issue within the last years. This has several reasons: parents got more and more rights which they (want to) use, they organise themselves in local and national boards, take the role as actors and by doing so have got a political voice which can hardly be ignored by politicians. However, do parents think that their expectations and wishes concerning school are really heard? To answer this question, we will present results from two quantitative studies, carried out 2011 and 2012 and funded by JAKO-O. In each study 3.000 parents, representative of all parents in Germany, were questioned by telephone-interviews. The results make clear that though parents are quite unsatisfied with several aspects of education policy (eg. inclusion), the majority feel that they are respected as partners in their wish to cooperate with schools and teachers. However, in some points they feel like “suppliers” of teachers and have the feeling that they have to do – from their point of view – the work teachers should do.
