Contribution

The aim of this paper is the collective work of physical education teachers in two public schools of the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The main question to answer is: How physical education teachers design and build the collective work and what are the possibilities and limits for this construction in two public schools in Porto Alegre, Brazil? The theoretical framework of research was primarily based on the ethnographic concepts by Geertz (1973), the studies of Woods (1998), Eisner (1998) and what currently recommend Denzin and Lincoln (2006). As a continuation we argued on auto-ethnographic with the recommendations of Reed-Danahay (1997), Ellis (2004), Chang (2008), and to understand the culture of the schools Ball (1989) and Hargreaves (1996).

Method

In the methodological approach in order to realize the collective work in depth we linked an ethnographic approach done in one of those schools that we denominated The Utopia Island (UI) with an auto-ethnographic approach carried out into effect in the other of those schools that was appointed The Eye of the Hurricane (EH). The fieldwork comprised the period of 17 months - September 2006 to January 2008. The analytic process was done through five analytic categories: a) Life stories and school history; b) Living, learning and experiencing violence; c) It’s difficult, but it’s possible to do; d) Looking for a collective work, we get lost between managements or the colleagues; e) Between the utopias and hurricanes. Methodologically we learn with the fieldwork that the researcher is a part of the research problem.

Expected Outcomes

The information of The Utopia Island has shown a strong collective work in which the physical education teachers have changed their pedagogical practice to get and to keep the school objectives in order to increase the teaching and learning. However in The Eye of the Huricane the collective work is impossible, because of drug violence and the social conditions of schooling that limit the teachers and the school to achieve its objectives. In fact, this situation results in the individualistic culture in the school and among the teaching staff. Finally the research has shown that participation in a collective work has a strong relationship with the life stories of the teaching staff and with the intensification of the teaching work. The social conditions of schooling, the configuration of the teaching staff and the relationship between the school and the community can favor or make a collective work difficult.
