The public discussion about the implementation of quality standards and their evaluation has increased during the last years, and has stimulated a critical debate about quality in social work. (Merchel 1998)
The above discussion has impacted on on the subjective view of professionalism regarding each and every social worker. (Speck 2006; Merchel 1998) The work of social workers needs to be efficient and effective. Discretionary decisions can easily be questioned even when they form a part of the social workers routine professional work. (Olk 2003)
The recent discussions in social pedagogy focus on the concept of reflexive professionalism (Dewe/Otto 2005), which can be defined in the workplace by the idea of cautious self-reflection.
Results in school social work are difficult to quantify, as is the case in all areas of social work.
School social work can be characterized by the intensive co-operation between social pedagogue and teachers. There in much empirical work on this co-operation (Olk 2005), but the impact of school social workers subjective habits and interpretive patterns have yet to be analyzed (Speck 2007).
This research study requirement is to explore how social workers combine work effectiveness and self-reflection in their daily work, with a special emphasis on school social workers.
This study will try to evaluate the two impacts of quality and the new professionalism debate on the subjective patterns of interpretation and discretionary decisions taken by school social workers.
My poster will describe the correlation of subjective habits and interpretive patterns by school social workers, and the impact of these on the quality of their work. These patterns do have effects on professionalism, and hence on the quality of school social work.
Method
The study is designed as an explorative, qualitative, research using interview data.
School social workers will be interviewed on their own, and also taking part in group discussions.
Expected Outcomes
The purpose of the study is to show the influence of subjective definitions of professionalism and quality on school social workers; and so the aim is to develop specific practices that can be used by these workers in their professional careers.
